Topic: Number

Prerequisite Knowledge: All pupils must know how to verbally count to 10.

Lesson Details

Show a large teacher version of ten-frames wither as an egg box or a foam based ten-frame. Stick the ten-frame on the whiteboard, somewhere it is easy for all the children to see and move any counters. Make sure the ten frame is places horizontally so that the children see two rows of 5s.
Show different numbers using the ten-frames and keep the numbers below 5. Each time you show a number, count up to the number re-enforcing 1-to-1 correspondence. Remember to always ask, "How many counters are there?" after showing each number on the ten-frame.
Show the number 5 with the top row and ask how many are there? Once it's establishsed that this is in fact 5, ask the class is there another of knowing it's 5 without counting? - The key objective here is for the class to know that when a row is completely full, it represents 5.
